Know Before You Ride?

In Ireland, electric scooter use is governed by clear rules: the maximum legal speed is 20 km/h, with motors capped at 400 watts and a weight limit of 25 kg. Scooters are for single riders only, no seats, and must be treated like bicycles—no footpath riding. While a helmet isn’t mandatory here, we strongly recommend one, plus a high-visibility vest for safety.

In Europe, maximum speeds often rise to 25 km/h, and rules vary by country—some nations require insurance or helmets by law.

At Lifty Electrics, we offer both road-legal scooters and off-road models for private use. Unsure which scooter is right for you? Email us at hello@lifty.co, and we’ll send you a complete list of legal options. Stay informed, ride safely, and enjoy the freedom of electric mobility!

How do I choose the right e-scooter for me?

When choosing the right e-scooter for you, think about your daily ride. If you’re mainly taking short trips—about 5 to 10 kilometers.

We have scooters with built-in suspension to smooth out your journey. And for those who conquer hills, our dual-motor scooters give you the extra power you need. So, whether you’re gliding on flats or climbing steep inclines.

We have the perfect ride tailored just for you.

What safety features should I look for in an e-scooter?

When choosing a safe e-scooter, look for key features like front and rear lights, and dual braking systems—both mechanical and electric—to give you reliable stopping power.

For added safety, some scooters offer drum brakes, which are long-lasting, while others have precise disc or hydraulic disc brakes.

A two-piston hydraulic brake offers balanced power, while a four-piston setup delivers even more stopping control—ideal for higher speeds.

Plus, some models have anti-skid systems (like ABS) to keep you stable, and wider tires also improve comfort and traction. With these features, you'll ride with confidence and stay safer on the road.

How fast do electric scooters go, and can I control the speed?

Electric scooters come with different speed levels depending on the model. Most entry-level scooters are designed for everyday use and are limited to safe, controlled speeds, while more advanced models offer higher performance for experienced riders.

Many scooters include multiple riding modes, allowing you to switch between slower, controlled speeds and more powerful performance when needed. This means you can ride comfortably in busy city areas and still have extra power when the road opens up.

Higher-end scooters with dual motors deliver stronger acceleration and better performance on hills, while still giving you full control through speed settings and throttle response.

Quick reminder: Road-legal electric scooters in Ireland are limited to a maximum speed of (20 km/h - 400W Power - up to 25kgs of weight - Seats is not permitted)

We also offer high-performance off-road scooters that can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h, but these are strictly for use on private property only, not on public roads.

Do I need suspension on an electric scooter?

Suspension plays a big role in how comfortable and stable your ride feels. If you're riding on smooth city roads for short distances, a scooter without suspension can still do the job.

However, if your routes include rough roads, bumps, or longer distances, a scooter with front, rear, or dual suspension will make a huge difference. It absorbs shocks from the road, reduces vibration, and gives you better control — especially at higher speeds.

Suspension also improves safety by helping your tires stay in contact with the ground, giving you more grip and stability while riding.

Do I need a licence to ride an electric scooter?

In Ireland, you currently do not need a driving licence to ride a road-legal electric scooter. However, there are still important rules you must follow.

Riders must use scooters that meet legal requirements, including a maximum speed of 20 km/h, and they should always ride in permitted areas such as roads or cycle lanes — not on footpaths.

While a licence isn’t required, it’s strongly recommended to ride responsibly, wear a helmet, and follow general road safety rules at all times.

High-performance electric scooters (off-road models) do not fall under road-legal use and should only be used on private property.

How much should I spend on an electric scooter?

The right budget depends on how you plan to use your scooter.

If you're looking for short, occasional trips (around 5–10 km), entry-level scooters are a great option. They’re more affordable and ideal for light, everyday use on smooth roads.

For longer commutes or more regular riding, it’s worth investing in a mid-range scooter. These typically offer bigger batteries, better range, improved comfort, and stronger build quality.

If you want top performance, higher speeds, or need to tackle hills and rough terrain, high-end scooters come with powerful motors, advanced suspension, and premium braking systems — built for maximum performance and durability.

Spending a bit more up front often means better reliability, more comfort, and a longer-lasting scooter, especially if you plan to use it daily.

Can I ride an electric scooter in the rain?

Yes — most electric scooters can handle light rain, but it depends on their water resistance rating (IP rating).

Entry-level scooters typically come with an IPX4 rating, which means they can handle light splashes and drizzle, but should not be exposed to rain or large amounts of water.

Moving up, scooters with IPX5 or IPX6 ratings offer better protection against water spray and moderate rain, making them more suitable for regular commuting in wet conditions.

Higher-end models may come with IPX7, meaning they can withstand temporary water exposure (like puddles or heavy rain), offering a much higher level of protection.

In rare cases, some premium scooters feature IPX8, which provides even stronger water resistance — but even then, they are not designed for full submersion or extreme conditions.

Important:

Even if your scooter is water-resistant, riding in the rain reduces traction and braking performance. Always ride carefully, avoid deep puddles, and dry your scooter after use to keep it in top condition.
