Who is eligible for the Bike to Work Scheme in Ireland?

The Bike to Work Scheme Ireland is available to all PAYE employees — both public and private sector workers. You are eligible if you are employed and pay tax through the PAYE system, and you intend to use the bike primarily for travelling to and from work. Self-employed individuals and those who are unemployed are not eligible. There is no minimum employment period required, and you can use the scheme once every 4 years. Both full-time and part-time employees can apply, and employers of all sizes can participate — from multinationals to small local businesses.

How do I apply for the Bike to Work Scheme with my employer?

Applying for the Bike to Work Scheme is straightforward. First, speak to your HR or payroll department to confirm your employer participates — most Irish employers do. Your employer will then issue a voucher or purchase order for the agreed amount. You bring this to Lifty Electric — in-store at Capel Street, Dublin or online — and choose your e-bike. Your employer purchases the bike on your behalf, and the cost is recovered through salary sacrifice over an agreed period (typically 12 months), meaning repayments are deducted before tax, PRSI, and USC. How long will it take to get an e-bike through my company?

The timeline for getting an e-bike through the Bike to Work Scheme via your employer is typically 1 to 2 weeks from start to finish. Here's how it usually works: once you speak to your HR or payroll department and they confirm participation, they will issue a purchase order or voucher — this usually takes a few days. You then bring this to Lifty Electric and choose your e-bike. If the bike is in stock, you can take it the same day. If it needs to be ordered, delivery is typically 3 to 5 working days.

⚠️ Please note: we currently have hundreds of customers applying every week through the Bike to Work Scheme, so delivery times can vary depending on the model. We strongly recommend checking the e-bike you're interested in as soon as possible so we can confirm availability and delivery time for you before you submit your application to your employer. Can I use the Bike to Work Scheme for an electric scooter?

Currently, the Bike to Work Scheme Ireland covers electric bikes (e-bikes) and cargo bikes, but does not include electric scooters under the current Revenue guidelines. However, legislation and scheme eligibility can change, so we recommend checking with Revenue or your employer's HR department for the latest updates. If you're interested in an electric scooter, Lifty Electric stocks a wide range of models from InMotion, KuKirin, Dualtron, Teverun and more — all available to purchase directly online or in-store with fast delivery across Ireland and Europe. Can I get a more expensive e-bike than the scheme limit?

Yes! The Bike to Work Scheme covers up to €1,250 for standard e-bikes, up to €1,500 for standard cargo bikes, and up to €3,000 for electrically assisted cargo bikes — but there is no upper limit on the bike price. If your chosen e-bike costs more than the scheme limit, you simply pay the difference yourself — either out of pocket or via an additional salary sacrifice arrangement with your employer. This means you can use the scheme towards any of our premium Fiido, Engwe, or other e-bike models regardless of price, and still benefit from the full tax relief on the covered portion.
