The Real Cost of Commuting in Ireland: Car vs Electric Scooter vs E-Bike

Imagine what an extra €4,000, €6,000 or even more each year could mean: less debt, a family holiday, progress towards a deposit—or simply less financial pressure.

For many Irish households, transport is one of the largest recurring costs. Yet the real price of commuting is easy to underestimate because it arrives in separate payments: finance, insurance, fuel, servicing, tyres, tax, parking, tolls and depreciation.

Then there is the cost no bank statement captures properly: time.

The morning commute nobody enjoys

It is 7:45 a.m. You are sitting on the M50, the N7 or crawling along Dublin’s quays. The light turns green. You move five metres. Then stop again.

Your coffee is cooling. The fuel gauge is falling. Work has not started, but the stress already has.

Now picture another morning: you unlock a suitable electric scooter or e-bike, use a protected route, connect with rail or bus if needed, and arrive without searching for parking. That option will not suit every person or every journey—but for the right short urban commute, the difference can be enormous.

What does a car really cost?

Fuel is only one line in the budget. A realistic car-cost calculation may include:

  • Finance repayments or the cost of tying up savings
  • Insurance and motor tax
  • NCT, servicing, tyres and brakes
  • Unexpected repairs
  • Parking and tolls
  • Fuel or electricity
  • Depreciation

The exact figure varies enormously by car, mileage, age, finance terms and location. A useful personal calculation is therefore better than a headline average.

Charging costs: small numbers, big contrast

The Kuickwheel S1 Pro is currently listed by Lifty at €899.99 with a 36 V, 13 Ah battery, an advertised range of up to 50 km in Eco mode under suitable conditions, dual front suspension and a listed weight of 22 kg.

Voltage multiplied by amp-hours gives a nominal battery capacity of about 0.47 kWh. Allowing for charging losses, one full charge uses roughly half a kilowatt-hour. Multiply that by your electricity unit rate to estimate the energy cost. At €0.40 per kWh, for example, that is about €0.20 of electricity for a nominal full charge.

Real-world range varies with rider weight, temperature, tyre pressure, gradients, speed and wind. Electricity is also not the whole ownership cost: tyres, brakes, servicing, protective equipment and eventual battery wear still matter.

The cheapest mode is not automatically the right one. Distance, weather, accessibility, route safety, cargo, family needs and legal compliance all matter. The financial win comes from replacing suitable car trips—not pretending every trip is identical.

Time is more valuable than money

If congestion adds 30 minutes each way, five working days a week, that is five hours per week. Across 52 weeks, it becomes 260 hours—nearly eleven complete days.

Even after allowing for holidays and remote-working days, the number is sobering. That time could mean family, exercise, rest or simply arriving without the emotional cost of gridlock.

Public transport and micromobility work better together

Buses, rail and Luas are essential, but they rarely connect every front door directly with every workplace. Scooters and e-bikes can solve part of the first- and last-kilometre gap: ride to a station, take public transport, then complete the final section.

That is not a battle between modes. It is a connected journey.

The e-bike advantage

E-bikes offer a wider practical range than many compact scooters, work well on hills, allow light exercise and can carry panniers or—in the right cargo-bike design—larger loads. For some commuters, they are the strongest car-replacement option.

Ireland’s Cycle to Work Scheme

Revenue’s Cycle to Work Scheme allows participating employers to buy a new bicycle and eligible safety equipment for employees or directors. It can be provided tax-free within the relevant limits, including up to €1,500 for pedelecs and e-bikes and up to €3,000 for cargo and e-cargo bikes.

A salary-sacrifice arrangement can run for up to 12 months. Your employer must make the purchase, participation is optional for employers, and the exemption does not cover electric scooters.

For eligible commuters, that can materially reduce the effective cost of a new e-bike depending on personal tax circumstances.

Cleaner air starts with the right short journeys

Every suitable car journey replaced by an e-bike, walking, public transport or a compliant electric scooter removes one tailpipe from that trip. No individual commuter will solve urban air quality alone, but thousands of different short-journey choices can reduce congestion, noise and local exhaust emissions.

Smarter mobility is not about eliminating cars. It is about using the right transport for the right journey.

Important: Irish e-scooter rules

For public-road use in Ireland, an e-scooter must meet the legal PPT requirements. Current Department of Transport guidance includes a maximum continuous rated power of 400 W, maximum net weight of 25 kg and maximum design speed of 20 km/h. Riders must be at least 16, must not use footpaths, carry passengers or goods, and must obey a 20 km/h speed limit and the rules of the road.

A scooter advertised with a higher design speed may not qualify for public-road use unless a compliant Irish configuration is supplied and certified. Always check the manufacturer’s plate and full technical classification before riding.

Ride safe. Ride smart.

  • Wear a properly fitted helmet.
  • Use high-visibility clothing, especially in poor light.
  • Keep front and rear lights working.
  • Maintain tyres, brakes and folding mechanisms.
  • Stay predictable and avoid phone use while riding.
  • Book professional servicing when anything feels wrong.
